Dr. Smriti Chowdhury graduated from Chittagong Medical College in Bangladesh, where she placed first amongst the class of 350 students. After her graduation, Dr. Chowdhury’s professional pursuits took her to various countries including Iraq, Ireland, Scotland, Saudi Arabia and finally Canada. During the process she found pediatrics to be her calling. She received her Pediatrics Diploma (DCH) in Dublin, followed by Membership in pediatrics (MRCP) in Glasgow and fellowship (FRCP) in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Dr. Chowdhury worked as a consultant pediatrician and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – before immigrating to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1996.
In Iraq she received a special award by the country’s then-President Saddam Hossain in 1979. A picture from that telecast by Iraq National TV follows.

Also noteworthy are Dr. Chowdhury’s teaching awards from the Dalhousie University Pediatric department. She received the “Silver Spoon Outstanding Teaching award” (awarded yearly by the pediatric residents) twice – in 2009 and 2023.
She also received the “Teacher of the Year” award (selected by the medical students rotating in pediatrics) twice – in 2013 and 2020. These awards are prestigious testaments of Dr. Chowdhury’s teaching and overall support to learners. To be awarded any of these once is considered a great career achievement, and Dr. Smriti Chowdhury has quite extraordinarily been awarded each of these twice.
