Dr. Souvik Mitra & Prerona Dutta

This powerful couple makes us, Halifax Bengali Community proud that they have achieved so much at such a young age Dr Souvik Mitra and Prerona Dutta.

Dr Souvik Mitra, a paediatrician by profession and cricket enthusiast by passion, has been awarded numerous times. He started his journey from Kolkata South Point High School, one of the best schools in the city and secured WBJEE rank in both Medical and Engineering stream – 31st in Medical and 60th in Engineering. As they say, you can’t take Pointers out of a person who once was a Pointer which Souvik proved time and again in his career being on the top in every place he went.

He enrolled in the best medical school in Kolkata and one of the best in the country – Calcutta Medical College. He completed his MD from Kolkata and was the topper (gold medalist) there too. He moved to Norway for a few months to fulfill his desire for getting into higher studies but went back to Kolkata. However, in 2013 he left his job to join McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and completed his Master’s degree in clinical epidemiology. He then joined Dalhousie University to complete his PhD. Currently he serves in the neonatal unit of IWK Health Centre and is an Associate Professor at Dalhousie University. He is also a scientist. He has flourished in IWK as both clinician and researcher over the past 7 years. Being a cricket and fitness enthusiast, he joined Halifax Cricket Club as the Captain and gracefully led the Div 3 team for the last six years.

Prerona Dutta has also done remarkably well in her career. She completed her MBA from Dalhousie University. She works for the Federal government. Previously she was with Procurement Canada and then last year she joined as Senior Policy Analyst in Health Canada. She has also recently been awarded. She received the 2023 Health Canada Award of Excellence as she serves as the Policy Analyst and Advisor in the Business Management and Stakeholder Engagement portfolio in Health Canada.

But with heavy hearts we would be bidding them goodbye as they embark on a new journey in the west coast where Souvik will join The University of British Columbia & BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre as a clinician scientist starting this August. Prerona will continue with her work for the Federal government, Canada.
