Durga Puja in the Maritimes has been celebrated since the late seventies. This Puja or the Sharod Utsav brings the Bengali Hindu community in Atlantic Canada together as a family immersed in a few days of adda, golpo and hoichoi.
Generally celebrated during the weekend, Ma Durga and Her children are brought to the venue on Friday morning and installed therein. The first Puja starts on Friday evening, followed by supper and cultural programs presented by community members. Saturday is spent at the ‘Puja Bari’ with Pushpanjali in the morning, Puja in the evening, supper and another session of cultural performances. The festivities are wrapped up by Sunday afternoon with Shati Jal, Baran and Sindoor khela.
Community members partake in creating sumptuous dishes which are enjoyed thoroughly by the attendees. The excellence of the items in the meals served continue to be topics of discussion well after the Pujas are over.
The committee welcomes all members of the community to the Puja this year and encourages all newcomers to the Maritimes to join in the festivities. Come and join us from September 23rd to the 25th and taste the Haligonian flavour of ‘Bangaliyana’ during those magical days.
