Prashanta Mukhopadhyay/Muki, our dear Prasantada or Mesho, completed his PhD from Jadavpur University. He has worked at Geological Survey of India (GSI) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in India. After receiving the prestigious Humboldt Scholarship, he did his post doctoral work in Germany and was associated with the Technical University of Aachen.
He then came to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to join Geo Fuel Company in 1988. In 1989 he moved to Halifax where he started his consultancy Global Geo Energy
Research with clients all over the globe. Since then he has been in the premier league of Organic Geochemists ushering in latest developments and pioneering
new avenues in his field of research. He was also an Adjunct Professor in the Earth Science Department of Dalhousie University.
He has authored many academic papers and has been a sought after speaker in international conferences. He was instrumental in organizing an
international conference for The Society of Organic Petrology (TSOP) in 2011. His efforts in highlighting the natural resources of Nova Scotia
in line with his work has received recognition from the Government of Nova Scotia. The plethora of awards received by him are a testament of his
contributions to his field of study. Very recently he was the recipient of the Atlantic Geoscience Society’s Distinguished Scientist Award – Gesner Medal.
Known as Halifax’s ‘Hemanta Kumar’ Prasanta Da/ Mesho has regaled audiences old and young during many of his singing performances over the years.
He also participated in the annual drama performances during the Durga Puja celebrations organized by the Sharodia Society. When this society was formed,
he served as its Treasurer for a couple of years. He has also performed duties as the priest during Saraswati Puja celebrations for many years.
He was also associated with INCA (Indo Canadian Association of Nova Scotia), Halifax.
He is indeed a rare persona among Bengalis who have combined entrepreneurship with academic rigour and has achieved excellence in both!
